I'm confused as to why someone would go to a religious school if they knew that their views would be nonconforming and met with hostility. It puzzles me.

Hes a child.. I'm sure he did not know in elementary school his orientation..And above all, he's a child of God so why not...

It was the diocese and the school admin. Sounds like the school has good teachers and a nurturing atmosphere, but the principal was a coward, afraid of what the diocese would say.

Even the Pope is more progressive at this point. Time to join modernity, Catholic School.

I read this young man’s speech and thought how beautiful. Hope he realises the school lost out and he won. Congratulations Mr. Bales.

Correct my counting if I'm wrong, but he gives his school honorable mention 3 times, and followed it up with describing the values he was taught while a student there. Very sad how they took the honor out of his achievement.

I don't think they took the honor out of him, rather they took the honor out of themselves. Congratulations to this brave young man!

The young people will surely win. Mr. Bales and Ms Frantz’ speeches were eloquent and positive and relevant. The powers that be at their school are ridiculous and should not be in the business of nurturing young minds. Shame on the principal.

Appalling. The school had no problem taking tuition money and censoring his speech. A bullhorn is a great tool for combatting bulls**t.

Our entire school supported him, it was the diocese that oversaw the school that denied it.
