None of these people intended to cause a death. Each could easily have been the one who ended up dead. But all were charged with murder.https://nyti.ms/2IKMP59

This is the EXACT OPPOSITE of how we should be treating this situation. In Toronto, lives are bein saved thanks to a policy which PROTECTS the people who call 911 to report an overdose. Criminalizing drug users is not only ethically WRONG, but also DANGEROUS...

It sucks anyone is being criminally charged as responsible for an overdose death, but this article felt like another NYT plea for white innocence.

What happens if I feed someone and they die of food poisoning from the food I gave them? Or I let them drive my car/bike? What if I share my swimming pool with them and they drown? At what point are people required to start taking responsibility for themselves?

•This shows the confusion & contradictions of America's anomic policy on "drugs" and addiction. On one hand, addiction is a disease, treatable & covered by insurance. On the other, it's a moral issue & a punishable crime! Which is it America? Illness or felony?

I've been off the Heroin since 1994. not a day goes by that I don't think of those who didn't make. That said I never once blamed anyone but myself for where the dope took me, I never came out of an OD looking accusatory at my companions, never even crossed my mind. My choices.

That doesn't seem very fair to charge friends, family, other users with any crimnal charges. Or even the dealer, these people know they are using a drug that can kill any user, no matter how experienced they are

This is another example of mass incarceration mentality. Also a reminder that we need DA's who don't think, or act, like this.

Gawd America, get your shit together. If only the addiction treatment cartel was richer and more connected than the prison cartel or big pharma some progress in treating people that are hurting could be made.

Knowing that drugs kill, they did it. What else on earth should they be tried for ? Charity?

Let punishment fit the crime. Death was a terrible accident but not criminal act.

If you share a stolen car, or a stolen gun, or some other thing that's not legal but could be lethal, does that make you a murderer? Wouldn't such things hinge on intent?
