Getting a lot of pushback against my tweet saying there’s room for a party that is economically left and socially right. Here’s the evidence from Lee Drutman.pic.twitter.com/I092RvqNAF

When you say "socially right" do you mean "racist" instead?

No offense and I like your tweets - but that is EXACTLY the kind of perspective that amplifies the polarisation tearing us apart. We need to be in the business of building bridges right now. Isaiah 58:12! :-)

Yeah, I just imagine a racist candidate who wanted to redistribute wealth (among whites) would be pretty appealing to most racists who aren’t rich.

Right, I get that - and there are a bunch of populists in Europe who totally exemplify why that fear is real. But I think we do ourselves a disservice if we vilify all social conservatives as racists: it's untrue, and makes it easier for them to tune us out as sneering liberals

Boy, there sure are a lot of data points against the left edge there. Maybe the origin should be somewhere else on that graph?

Wow. What is going on at the lower right quadrant? I just want small government, and for people to be nice to each other.

That's the libertarian zone, where far fewer voters actually reside than people with those inclinations believe. There are a lot of voters in the top left zone that are split between R and D, but an explicitly "populist" party would fit there.

"I just want small government that's nice to people" is a more polite way of saying "I don't want mah tax dollahs paying for { fill in the blanks }."

I said I wanted PEOPLE to be nice to each other. Can we really legislate manners? While small government SHOULD be less expensive, I'm more concerned with freedom.

I don't know about that but doesn't this scattergram show that liberals are much more extreme in their views than conservatives? There are a lot of dots in the lower left. Not very many in the upper right. Who are the real extremists?

It's not like these are some sort of absolute measurement. What counts as a middle or edge is defined by the people doing the study and making the graph.
