I continue to find these arguments unpersuasive.https://twitter.com/DavidLoySD/status/1128658534135095296 …

It’s also v impressive to be a law professor and take on the counseling and guardianship of a group of undergraduates. But that dual role may not be tenable if you also take on a representation that, however worthwhile, makes students unwilling to report sexual assaults to you.

But you're still acting like it's wrong to provide a legal defense for someone accused of a crime. That is a tragically illiberal view. Why does he have to "take responsibility" for doing something liberal philosophy says lawyers must do?

An apt real-life conflict that actually did exist in the past for many Harvard (and other) profs wherein they were doing cancer research but also getting tobacco company research funding. Over the years this conflict essentially became indefensible

I'm hoping you see this and comment on it. It wasn't *just* the representation of Weinstein that seems to have left students skeptical about Sullivan. It's also his comments about an ongoing Title IX investigation at Harvard.https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2019/2/4/sullivan-defends-freyer/ …

So not just harming the accused's right to a legal defense but also a professor's right to free speech? awesome!

Like, if a Harvard Law Prof who is responsible for creating an inclusive and safe environment for students really wants to take on the defense of high profile cases of abuse and harassment, perhaps you should just go work as a private defense lawyer? It's an open labor market?
-
Yes, because why on earth should law students be exposed to the reality that even the worst offenders have a Constitutional right to legal defense!!!!

Also from what I understand there are other factors about how Sullivan operated as a faculty Dean beyond his representation of Weinstein that made his continuing presence in that role untenable
-
Then why not come out and say that? Can't be any worse than solely because the prof is affording the accused the right to counsel.
