What's the goal? It's often a great experience but unless you have an outcome in mind you might end up setting a pile of money on fire If you just need compute I've got a workstation I'm not much using you're welcome to remote into

said yes, under the premise that for some reason you need a desktop not a laptop. but there are vanishingly few people who need desktops any more. next month the new AMD-based laptops are going to come out. huge cpu, huge gpu, small price, portable.

the leaked benches i've seen show the onboard GPU keeping rank with a Nvidia 1660M, which is a very respectable gaming platform. but these won't be "gaming" machines, they'll just be machines.

Once.

I'm a big fan of Once too. With computers it might be Once … in a while. Sometimes. Once upon a time was 15+ years ago I think. The new Twice machine now is *really nice*. Enough little quantitative nudges and bumps over the years to clamber over the qualitative threshold.

If yes, a tip: don't skimp on the case. Some say that "the case is the least important bit, buy whatever". Bad idea! I made that mistake once - warped, sharp edges everywhere, bits irreplaceable once removed. A semi decent case with modular innards is SO much nicer to work with.

Also, if you want a computer & are vaguely interested in building it yourself then I'd say go for it. Key benefit IMO is knowing that you could replace parts if you wanted, even if you rarely actually do.

Yes! It’s all I’ve done since I was in high school, and I’d never go back. (Apart from getting laptops in situations where I really needed them.) In my non-scientific anecdotal experience the computers I build always seem to last longer than those I have bought.

A few things I’d mention: - Make sure the power supply is from a manufacturer with a good reputation (by looking around at what people say on forums, websites etc). - Read about ESD prevention if you haven’t already.
