Call to cognitive sciences / neuroscience people: What would you say are some scientific principles to consider when attempting to delineate between pleasant/delightful design with low friction and a negatively addictive design?

This is such an interesting concept. Design to engage the mind enough that it doesn't have to do heavy lifting to get access to the information it is looking for. Good design encourages flow, but does it then run the risk of being addictive...?

thinking of design as exclusively visual is your issue here. sure reddit has lots of silly redesigns but imo scrolling through the comments is just as much of a gamble on dopamine as any other social media platform. & my point isn't even that that's necessarily bad

This is a super interesting point. It makes me think “addiction” is the wrong problem, and even if it were the right one, “design” (particularly visual design) would still be the wrong place to look for a solution.

Fundamentally I guess it’s that the makers and users have opposing interests. For most tech anyway. There is no trust anymore because the economic relationship (users as a resource to be exploited) has become more and more clear. DIY stuff would be the exception.
