We have THE Masayuki Uemura coming to the museum in a couple of weeks, and that's a big deal. Why? Well, he was the designer for the Nintendo Entertainment System (this beauty right here.) 🎮 A THREAD ABOUT THE NES 🎮

  4. It's the first kiss of many. Accompanied by the blaring sounds of 'Cowabunga!' and 'TEENAGE mutant NINJA turtles'. But that first date was over one year ago - so what happened to Mik and Claire? (This is where our hearts swell... ❤️❤️❤️)

  5. After jumping from game to game, they decide to play on our TMNT Arcade cab. Mik chooses Leonardo; Claire is Donatello. Turns out they're an ace team - they rinse through it! And as Shredder falls, they turn to each other. They look in each others eyes. They... kiss. 😍😍😍

  6. They both love videogames, so it's the perfect choice. At first, there's a gauche awkwardness - does Mik like the same games as Claire?! What if Claire is a Sega person, whilst Mik is die hard Nintendo?! It doesn't matter - they play all the games. And they play them together.

  7. Let's set the scene: It's January 2019, and Mik and Claire are looking for love. Their mutual friends set them up. They get in touch over WhatsApp. They flirt. They get on. And they decide to go on their first date. Where? The National Videogame Museum.

  9. 🎮 🎮 Day #7 🎮 A trainer you can battle in Pokemon X/Y is trans. Beauty Nova tells the player: “Yes, a mere half a year ago I was a Black Belt! Quite the transformation, wouldn’t you say?” Note: all Black Belts present as male in the game and all Beauties as female.

🎮 🎮 Day #6 🎮 Butterfly Soup is a visual novel with a super compelling story. The game is set in 2008, following four young queer Asian-American girls in their year of high school who all attend the same baseball club.

As transparent as it might look now, this idea actually worked. The NES pretty quickly took the world by storm, and sold in huge quantities. It then provided the base for massive games such as Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt and Metroid!

The NES wasn't a 'game system'. At least not at first. No, this was a 'home entertainment system'. And those things that look like cartridges? They're 'Game Paks' that go into the 'Control Deck'. This definitely isn't the game console you're used to. Totally different. 😉

Getting into the US was a little more difficult however. Nintendo initially had a distribution deal with Atari, however back in 1983, the US game market wasn't looking too healthy... (Lookin' at you Atari E.T. 👀👀) So Nintendo tried to do something a little different...

It had a bit of a rocky start when it first released in Japan. A batch of faulty chips caused first batch of released systems to crash. 😬😬😬 Wasn't too much of a problem however - it then became the best selling videogame console WITHIN A YEAR. 😁😁😁

The western release of the NES does look slightly different however. Our version is very much a grey box, whilst Japan's is a much more colourful affair. The Famicom even had a controller slot to store your controller when you weren't using it! Inside they're the same though.

For one of the most important videogame consoles of all time, it sure does have a lot of names. Originally released in Japan, the Family Computer was called the Famicom for short. But in South Korea it was called the Comboy. And its development codename was the 'GameCom'!
