Thankfully, a lot has changed since the ‘40s and ‘50s. Diversity is increasing and ads like this are cringeworthy relics of the past.

As a actor who’s earned a very positive public image and is admired by a lot of younger people, he really shouldn’t have said that joke.

I like both RDJ and Taylor, especially RDJ. I think that joke definitely across the line. But I have faith in RDJ’s characters. He would most likely apologize later. I won’t defend him by saying “it’s just a joke” or “he didn’t write it”.

It surprised me that some people defended RDJ that he didn’t write the joke as if his reputation and connections in showbiz doesn’t allow him to kill a potentially controversial joke he didn’t feel right about. Plus the script must had been read by his own team

I don’t even wanna blame them at this point. What went wrong are a whole system, not a small bunch of people

Saw this on Weibo. This HK youngster doesn’t know about Nanjing Massacre. I knew the education system in HK has gone wrong, but the ignorance about CN history he/she showed shocked me...had they known more about CN history, things might has been different today

I agree with most of this excellent piece. The main problem - which has nothing to do with Huw or many, many others - is that impartiality is not the same as equality and the Corporation doesn't yet know how to deal with deliberate lies from very senior politicians & aides.

The New York Times will uncritically and sympathetically quote fascists if it means getting a hit in on China. Italy is the birthplace of fascism, but somehow this surge in anti-immigrant hate is China's fault — even though Chinese Italians are the ones targeted.

The NYT paints people who build buildings as comic book villains, and then puzzles over why citizens in cities like San Francisco oppose new buildings. They read your paper and have been trained to think that all new development comes as a result of bad, greedy people.

Too many people sit in conferences or on China themed podiums, without having read a single language document in their life. This is a problem, because often their second hand based knowledge and resulting misunderstandings divert from the real problematic issues.

In order to profile you, they must need to analyze everything you say on all kinds of social media. What kind of modern technology can achieve needed accuracy? Only depends some key words are clearly not enough

To make a more specific example, if the score you get in the system affects you in all aspects of life, your score and relative information will inevitably be accessible to countless people. The banks you borrow money from, the HRs of the company you work for, etc.

Designing and operating such a complex system for 1.4 billions people, and keeping it secret, it’s technically impossible. How does it even make sense?

How does it even function? What are the criterial to judge a person? How does it affect them? Would it make it hard to find jobs or work for the government? If it’s applied nationwide, how come nobody ever talked about it at all?

Western media claims China has a social credit system for every citizens. It evaluates one’s submission level and whatnot. I don’t even understand what evidences you found on this. It’s one of the most ridiculous thing I ever heard
