In my first piece for my new substack on armwrestling, I cover the curious case of “Monster” Michael Todd, a world class athlete with a gutter tier ego.

MYTH: radiation is uniquely dangerous, and there’s no safe exposure – no matter how small.
REALITY: the idea of “no safe exposure” has caused far more harm to public health than actual radiation from all nuclear accidents.

Is the anti-nuclear debate actually about nuclear, or about energy, or something else? Emmet Penney found this gem from the old days.
(Spoiler. The debate is really about Malthus.)

This is one of the best pieces of writing I've ever read about the politics of energy in America.

Bravo to for digging up a truly fascinating document that stood the test of time and gives us a lot to think about.
Is the energy debate really about energy? By Bertram Wolfe, originally published in 1982 in the IAEA Bulletin. 🧵

First, the good news: The only new US nuclear plants to be built in the last 3 decades are coming online soon.
Awesome.
Yet, the future of US nuclear energy is at serious risk.
If we don't make reforms soon, it might be too late.

In the biz, it's called branding.

It is because much of the Left in its current iteration is broadly inhospitable to critique that heterodox thinkers can be hived off by publications whose mission is to sow confusion about who is on what side. n+1 and Compact share an unconscious bond.

It’s happening. My prof spent about 20 mins of lecture today on #nuclear. JUST nuclear!
She mentioned radiation exposure from living near waste vs flying on a plane.
One person said nuclear deaths were far lower than other energy sources. People nodded.
Things are changing.

France’s nuclear fleet is failing at a time when Europe most desperately needs reliable power.
Some point to this as evidence that nuclear in France is old and unreliable.
The truth is, France worked very hard to achieve this collapse 🧵

Addressing land usage and material needs is crucial as the world moves towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
The use of land can be contentious as it competes with other uses and impacts the natural environment.
This is why nuclear matters👇

One of the things I’m glad we did at ex.haust was go chapter by chapter through entire books.
I worried at first that people would only listen to our commentary, but was pleased to hear from readers that we were why they finished After Virtue or The True & Only Heaven, etc.
