    .'s book “Advanced Game Design” is gold. I love this bit: just 3 rules can lead to interesting system behavior, like a flock of birds. In the same vein, think of how the ghosts in Pacman provide challenge through a similarly lean ruleset.

    If you're a creator of any kind, you should get 's "Self-Command" audiobook: . Chris has a golden take on focus: In past tense, write 1 sentence of what you plan on _immediately_ doing. Then do that thing. Been really helpful for me!

    Was a little disappointed that my Toy Box Jam game didn't work out. But I moved onto another prototype about lousy city driving. Almost have the core loop in place.

  12. Here's the article! What's cool is that you can implement splash, menu, pause, dialogs, etc. states, and have multiple states running at the same time. And you can reason about transitions as stack pushes/pops.

  13. Been reflecting on my inability to ship a game. 😐 I think a key part is setting up your framework: you need a game goal, and a win/lose condition. Taking a cue from 's Game Programming Patterns, I implemented a game state stack.

  14. Weighted choices are nifty in game dev. Example in PICO-8 that one can use to simulate a drunk walk: weighted_choice { [-1] = 1, [0] = 5, [1] = 1 } weighted_choice { ['left'] = 1, ['keep'] = 5, ['right'] = 1 } Impl (can optimize tokens of course):

  17. The Witcher on Netflix () is so ridiculously good. It's hard to work on my Toy Box Jam game while the temptation to binge-watch lingers. 😅 (I have been hacking away though, – sorry for the lack of updates! Don't wanna show something incomplete.)
