If we can do this with coronavirus why not with Parkinson’s, ALS, rare diseases or cancer? As pointed out, we should treat them all with the same sense of urgency.

Ken Starr unironically lamenting that impeachments are happening "all too frequently" is so much better with a laugh track

As an FSU student, I've seen zero negative effects from cancelling Elsevier. This might change if there is less easy access via ILL in the future, but anything that moves away from the current publication profit model is a plus to me.

    3. Every institution in a consortial deal needs to know exactly what their limit is. 4. Journals has been really helpful in providing granular data to backup their negotiating position.

.'s key points on negotiations 1. Use video chat w/ your negotiating team. Seeing others' faces / reactions provides important info 2. Setup a backchannel w/ negotiating team when speaking to vendors. This can allow you to pivot & ensure you have some consensus

I have already told and that our libraries should do this. Great to see how well it is working for .

I was part of one committee that helped make this choice (and presented plan to Psych faculty). There was some nerves but FSU Libraries had a plan that made it very palatable. And wow it looks like it paid off! And a year into it, no complaints by faculty (that I’ve heard).

I've debated whether to share what happened the night I went back to Dulles Airport to help two travelers arriving from Iran who were detained for nearly 7 hours. Retaliation is certainly something I've considered as an immigration lawyer, but these days it just seems so real.

Keys to negotiating more aggressively / cancelling big deals: You have to engage your community. You have to be transparent. You have to have champions. You have to talk to faculty all along the way.

The Elsevier contract represented 1/4 of Florida State’s spend.

Key point at the Forum here at : signing non disclosure agreements in publisher contracts has dramatically reduced library leverage collectively. We have to try to hold the line and stop agreeing to NDAs.

It appears that it's not just Florida State where Elsevier’s high projections for token / pay-per-view cost failed to materialize post cancellation

Elsevier told Florida State they would spend more than $1,000,000 on tokens / pay-per-view. So far after the cancellation, they’ve spent $20,000. Deans are saying the library made the right decision in cancelling. Gale Etschmaier at

Elsevier knows the future of publishing isn’t publishing. It’s tools built on data. It’s essential libraries get that, or we’ll be locked into Elsevier for the next 20 years - at For more on this point, check out our landscape analysis
