Moving to a new apartment in SF in September, need to buy a desk and a chair. Any recommendations? I would buy the chair I used to have in the UK but they don't sell it in the US :(

For chairs, I strongly recommend going to a showroom and trying them in person. Humans vary in a lot of dimensions and there's no standardized way of summarizing that!
If you're willing to spend $500-$1000, Steelcase has a variety of models that are all very high quality.

The very last in-person trip that I did pre-pandemic (March 5, 2020, apparently) was to a Steelcase showroom. I knew that I was going to need a better office chair and nearly bought a Steelcase Gesture based on internet recommendations.
It turns out that I find the Gesture very uncomfortable, but really liked the Leap! I think there's basically no chance I would have noticed that if I hadn't visited in person.
