That seems maybe too pessimistic? We have more options now, like vaccines. At minimum, we know much, much more so we know which interventions make sense and which don't (like fomites on groceries), and lots more data about what the shape of the risks.

I'm feeling pretty pessimistic at the societal level - I don't see how this ends without, say, >100k more Americans dying, among other things. At a personal level it seems bad but much better than February 2020 felt, at least?

Oh, sorry that you also have immigration-related stress. I'm guessing you're living in the US? I'm pretty pessimistic about those problems will go away even a year from now, sadly. :-(

I don't think that most Americans have realized how bad the system has gotten, even outside of pandemic-specific restrictions. I'm hearing about 9+ month wait times for visa interviews at consulates in, like, the UK, and well over a year in some other places.

I feel like in the next year the only new foreigners coming to the US might be the trickle of people who finally get visas plus Canadians and, uh, Bermudians who can get most stuff processed at the border.

I get to play on easy mode (🇨🇦) and it's still... utterly exhausting. I try to be noisy about it to Americans when I can since I usually have the energy too, unlike people who don't get all the special exceptions.
