Fun fact: in 2021 even many servers are CPU bound! People assume that "database-backed" = i/o bound, but actually, it's 2021, disks/network are very fast, and Python/Ruby/your favorite ORM are not.

After three years of building databases, I recently did some database-backed web dev and learned that all my intuitions are totally off for exactly this reason. I'd think "that'll be easy, no problem" and then the ORM totally choked on it.

In one case all we needed was some JSON output. Our experiment with generating the JSON results using Postgres's JSON APIs got a 30-40x speedup. 🤯
