I know nothing about framing buildings, but I love these kinds of recommendations: a real person optimizing to solve their real problems. And they're surprisingly hard to find: all the attempts to create a "Book of Correct(TM) Products" has lost touch with this spirit eventually.

My new current favorite general purpose framing screw (#9 x 2.75"). Torx drive, self-countersinking, and thin enough to usually not need predrilling. ("Gold Star Wood Screw" from Jack Sales on Amazon.) This corrects all the issues with the previous ones I was using.
