The flip side of this is that "starting your own trail" vs. "following an existing one" is a strange thing to have as a high order bit. If you have a terminal goal other than "start your own trail", it's usually much more efficient to follow an existing one, *if it exists*.

Everyone I know of who successfully started a genuinely new trail did it out of exhausted exasperation that no one else had even looked at that patch of mountainside before. It was the option of last resort, not the thing they wanted to do. Does that match your intuition?
