Watching the pre-recorded beach volleyball and noticed just now that one of the Russian women is wearing a heart-rate monitor, which I don't think I've seen before. Probably not a bad idea considering the weather for this tournament.

Seems like a useful thing in general. I wonder why it isn't more standard, or conversely what those athletes in particular want to do with it that the others don't (or haven't thought to do?).

Yeah, I always wear one on my bike, and I'm far from athletic; the HRM provides a more accurate estimate of respiration rate and thus energy consumption. The women are rail-thin with no body fat at all so you'd think they need to pay extra attention to their energy balance.
