I used to do this with equations! I'd read the prose around them and then skip over them. This is a huge problem because my work involves a lot of math. I think I was sort of expecting to digest equations at these same speed as prose, but equations/diagrams are much denser.

There's an awful lot of people for whom it doesn't work... I weakly believe that a significant fraction of them could break through with small amounts of practical advice (like "plan to spend an hour per page reading a math text; it's not like a history book")
