I unironically think that "interfacing with paperwork systems" is the most promising application of GPT-3-level language models, now that we have them.

My parents complained about paperwork, but the amount they had to do was wildly less than the amount I have to do. The amount I had to do thirty years ago was wildly less than what I have to do now. We’ve slid into this mostly without noticing how bad it has gotten.

They aren't exactly smart, but they can produce language at about the level that I think you need to produce and consume forms (or with a vision module in front, a fax of a fax of a scan of a form...)

To be clear, I wouldn't try to literally do this with the GPT-3 API for a variety of reasons, but I suspect that someone with similar resources and a dedication to this particular vertical could make it work.

Unlike many near-term applications of big language models, I feel like this could plausibly be net-very-good for humanity as a whole, thanks the amount of labour it could free up.
