Correct me if I’m wrong, but the AlexNet breakthrough in using GPUs for DL came a while after the invention of powerful GPUs for gaming 😛

GPU programming was (is?) a pretty difficult/obscure skill, and as I understand it neural nets were out of vogue before 2012. I think this was one of these situations where you needed someone (or a small group) who had several obscure skills/beliefs working on the same thing.
