Have you tried rationalising extremely desirable options into undesirable ones?
But actually I was thinking about it in terms of when you have three choices, and pick the first. Then later on the first becomes untenable.

You need to successfully deconstruct your prior rationalisations in order to make new decisions.

If you can't do that, then cost the newly-discovered negative externality. Legible faults with magnitude are leverage.
