In 2006, there was such a strong norm of supporting the Voting Rights Act that even Trent "when Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him, we're proud of it" Lott voted in favor of renewing it. Nowadays it's politically acceptable to just explicitly oppose voting rights.
