By that argument, Obama's election to the Senate in 2004 was even more important than The Apprentice. But most people consider such stepping stones, however crucial, to be minor compared to the social factors that lead to presidents' ultimate victories.

I think there's a difference between the stepping stones of a conventional politician (which Obama ultimately was, even if his rise was unusually rapid) and the stepping stones of a wild card. (Yes, that is a terrible mixed metaphor and I'm sorry.)
