My heart is bursting. On the eve of my first child's birth, my dad - who's been in prison nearly my entire life - was granted clemency. He never intended harm, yet his crime devastated many families. My heart breaks for the families that can never get their loved ones back.

The three people your father helped murder when he was a leader in a communist terrorist group never got to see or hear their loved ones again.

Do you think people can be redeemed or change? I'm not sure what the point of a prison system is if we can't at least make good effort at allowing people chances at new beginnings.

I think the biggest issue is the whole "never intended harm." Redemption isn't an easy road but playing off an atrocity as just some unforseen consequence unintended to happen is a smack in the face to the families of the deceased

Yes, I agree that was a very poor choice of phrase to use. I suppose it could be true as well. I imagine situations like that get out of hand quickly and people who thought they were incapable of violence often resort to it. Seems to happen in a lot of robberies.
