The game is based on Raymond Bernard's 1927 film Le joueur d'échecs (The Chess Player), which tells a fictional story based on a real-life hoax: The Mechanical Turk, a chess-playing automaton.

One of the final moments of the film features the automaton being shot by firing squad (with its inventor, Baron von Kempelen, inside) while the hero's rival is attacked by an army of sword-wielding robots.

In the end, von Kempelen succumbs to his wounds while visions of his creations appear in his mind—and, of course, the young lovers are able to escape.
