This story reminds me a lot of software and expertise. There are so many things we've learned not to do that we can't even explain anymore or even reach the part of our brain that knows how to or how to not do a thing.

She never thought to even explain to him NOT to put a plate in there because it was so inherently obvious to her.

Her son had tried to toast bread, but kept the bread on the plate.

My friend taught her son how to use the toaster recently. she explained all the notches to him, how each turn on the knob increases the minute count, etc. She received a text from her husband the next day saying that he found a plate in the toaster.

"The decision to describe some set of activities as an incident is a judgment made by people above the line. Thus, an incident begins when someone says that it has begun and ends when someone says it has ended...incidents are constructed."

Code Reviewers - it's easy to go pure negative/nitpicking, even if you're using helpful/constructive language. if you see something you like, SAY SOMETHING. It makes people's days. Today I had a total in a PR.

Unpopular opinion - conf organizing edition: Tech conferences have too much tech content and very little focus on the human side of things and the impact of technology in our society

Even if it doesn’t have “customer impact” associated, if engineers familiar and responsible for production systems thinks it should be an incident, then it. is. an. incident. That’s the criteria. Your competition is *hoping* you’ll use a static set of definitions/severity. 🙂

You know how, if you look, you can find trauma-aware medical professionals and dentists, etc.? What we need in software are trauma-aware designers, developers, and VCs. Because the world is trying to break a lot of us, and our software doesn’t know that.
