so @dev_console said PC98 emulation would be easy, turns out he (a) lied and (b) forgot to mention "assuming Windows or MacOS". So I grabbed the sl9821 source and am now porting to Linux. Hacked Mac platform.h to be Linux-ish, put 'gcc *.c' in a makefile, time to stub some stuff!

Have you looked at renderdoc? It allows inspecting the gl pipeline and intermediate values between its stages

It looked indeed like a better tool but it didn't like capturing my code despite afaict only using OpenGL 3.2 and not old compact stuff (which is a requirement for renderdoc). Maybe I'll grab the source and try to work out what goes wrong..
