We’re all sitting on conquered land. Up until Western democracies came on to the scene, the idea of giving up hard won territory was considered lunacy. The Brits were also one of the firsts to take a stand against the eons old practice of slavery, enforced by the Royal Navy.

Oooooh America, you’re right. Good show. And here I thought that the Canadians granted us our independence in exchange for eliminating the tariff on maple syrup imports.https://twitter.com/PandaSalesman/status/1369085652625547266 …

John O’Dwyer Noonan, actually! I mean I think The Treaty is a great exception, along with the Rhodesians who unilaterally declared independence from the Crown for very bad reason. But y’know, you can’t do ‘em all with the swipe of a pen in Whitehall. Just most of them.https://twitter.com/HelenKennedy/status/1369092580995198979 …

Ok this one made me laugh. I mean we go back and forth about whether Atlee’s government acted out of necessity or Labor benevolence when they granted India independence but honestly I’m just here for the gifshttps://twitter.com/Borderscrossed/status/1369097309812834305 …

Ok ok I’m going to confess that you should *never* use “all” when there are some key examples to the contrary. Also “gave” not “give!” Was thinking Atlee, Wilson, Winds of Change, Dominions, etc and so forth. Sloppy. I know! But I’m just living for the replies so tweet stays

Genuine laugh at this one just because A)it’s clever and B) reminds me that there are so many historical grievances against the British that even the British seem to hate the British.https://twitter.com/LieutenantRusty/status/1369086387383795712 …

Hey a thoughtful reply. I mean this is the crux of the debate right? Post WWII did they act out of altruism or necessity? You read Winds of Change and it’s about necessity. But there were plenty of broke empires that held onto holdings regardless. https://twitter.com/MazMHussain/status/1369122715693690882 …
