Uhm... you don't have any other computer? Maybe that's one of your problems as well, you need to setup a UEFI bootable USB drive with an up to date distro and then try to install it in that laptop. Just try to find the way, ask a friend or something. Use YUMI or Etcher.

My friends don't have computers. Library public computers restricted, try to burn CD/DVD makes coaster; not allowed to install program to make USB. Don't have many friends at this age, 60+, all dead
or gone retirement places.1 reply 1 retweet 0 likes -

In that case, don't throw away what you already have, even if you get a dream system76 machine in some time, keeping this one and installing linux on it later can save you in case you want to do anything else (such as installing another distro to your new machine)

What I have is nothing! Last Linux system I had crashed bad, nothing left is some memory & a drive which might be bad...? and Mint 18.2 DVD which is useless anymore. I might be able to recover data when I get a external dock for the drive, last dock I had lasted 3wks.

You can't repair it? If you could get some spare parts (a new drive) and a newer Mint 19 disc I think you could still use it, that's what I did with my older laptop.

Lost cause? That's your angle? Unbelievable. Is the motherboard dead? Is the CPU fried? I doubt it, it just seems you lost all hopes but I think you should find someone that can repair it. I wonder if we poor third world people are better at repairing hardware or what.

cost more to repair than new system it was a lap top & will not even turn on anymore, it is history If it was fixable I would have unfortunately new system requires new linux even if it would run like I said before no way to make DVD

Won't even turn on anymore... sounds like a power issue. It could be the adapter plug. Who knows if the repair costs would be higher than a new one as you say. I would still try. Sometimes we have to adapt parts to save a good old piece of hardware.

Duh... first thing I checked was the AC Adapter. Something on the motherboard fried itself - costs more than a whole new system!
