Re: BW having no balance patches. Maps balanced the matchups in BW for years. There were only four maps in a pool with more extreme differences between them. The SC2 map system doesn't serve the same purpose so seasonal balance tweaks are more important.

There were weird maps like Katrina, which was P>T, and Monty Hall, which was T>P. I'm sure there are some more extreme examples that I don't remember, but the worst maps don't last more than a single tournament, so they're quickly forgotten.

Some maps stayed a long time despite an obvious trend in imbalance for a certain matchup, but ideally the pool would be balanced out with other maps that were good for the other race in the matchup.

Fighting Spirit is a map with great balance: https://tl.net/tlpd/korean/maps/237_Fighting_Spirit …

But Longinus was really popular too despite some imbalance, but it's able to last a few seasons because another map in the pool would offset its imbalances. https://tl.net/tlpd/korean/maps/121_Longinus_2 …

As long as a map didn't heavily favor the same race in both its matchups, like T>P AND T>Z, then it could stay a while. That can be worked with.

As bad as PvZ was for years in BW, if Protoss got to pick all 4 maps for a bo5 (one map played both first and last), it'd be a fair fight or Protoss favored. Despite how many SC2 maps there are, I don't think protoss players can pick 7 maps to beat top zergs in SC2 in a bo7.
