Striking how frequently the Chiefs look like they're running basketball plays and making basketball moves.

At a pro-strike rally for Stop and Shop workers last year, I spoke to about a dozen members of various unions that were there. Joe Biden was speaking. Not a single one, many from the building trades, said they would vote for Biden -- unless their union endorsed him.

Here's a recent SurveyUSA poll showing a pretty pronounced union household surge toward Bernie:

Behind the Bernie surge among Democratic voters appears to be a Bernie surge among union voters specifically. Many are rallying around him and are skeptical of Biden.

That would definitely be the institutional view of labor. Pretty much every major union would endorse Biden and work hard for him. But there are a lot of rank and file members who aren't considering the composition of the NLRB when they cast their vote

I'm late to this but great story from and on why there are so few black NFL coaches seems safe to say that social network-based hiring is basically a graveyard for diversity.

Also, I’m not making any claim about Obama-to-Trump voters generally (i.e., non-union). Entirely possible that Biden is more likely than Bernie to win those folks back, as the data on general election matchups would suggest. 6/

In general, I’d say union members who voted for Trump and would be more likely to ditch him for Bernie than Biden tend to be in sectors that have been hurt by international trade (like autoworkers), and who tend to be younger. 5/

My colleagues also talked to union voters in PA who preferred Biden because, unlike Bernie, he doesn’t want to ban fracking, which is a source of union jobs there. So it’s a bit tricky and nuanced. 4/

That said, the data on this is very limited, and the data we do have is hazy. And there are definitely union voters - maybe firefighters, cops, building trades - who are more likely to defect from Trump to Biden than from Trump to Bernie, if they defect at all. 3/

The most important reason is probably trade, followed by a sense that the political establishment is broken and they want nothing to do with an establishment pol. 2/

My take away from talking to lots of union officials and members for this piece is that there are probably more Obama-to-Trump union voters who would vote for Bernie in 2020 than who would vote Biden. 1/

Wait, Gene Hackman is 90? I took him for one of those guys who would always be 60. Like he was basically 60 when he was born, and he would just kinda stay that way for eternity.

How does the Obama legacy affect Biden's chances in the primaries? For most voters, clearly a plus. For union members … it’s complicated. Here’s Jared Bernstein, Biden’s top economic adviser as VP:

Can Biden win back the union voters who abandoned Hillary? I asked some of those union voters. They had concerns, and a lot were super keen on Bernie.

This seems like pretty good news for Democrats given that Bloomberg has pledged to support the Dem nominee
