my mental model for most interpersonal problems is "don't worry about it and it'll sort itself out" which actually works shockingly well 99% of the time

Very different to my experience. Are you sure it's not a false perception of resolving itself is really that you just start accepting the result. I find acceptance is misunderstood as something resolving naturally.
