The Torah is about "How to Be" before you know how you should be. The innate sense that "I should be a certain way" is opposite to popular ideas independence & freedom as ideal. But the point of the Torah was to transcend the rules by understanding the principles behind them.

I thought I didn’t care about permission structures, but as I’m getting older I feel like I need them, even though I don’t have a logical reason for it yet (and maybe never will). I kind of see it as a flaw though, like a result of how scarily long life is
