You are totally allowed to spend hours tanning until you look nothing like your natural self, but no one is allowed to say "I want to look sexier than other girls". You can spend late nights working and days networking, but not say "I want to have my boss's job someday."

Not everyone who explicitly does so are inherently terrible in my eyes, but I feel like it really comes down to their intentions. Are you stating them because you are truly proud of them? Or because you just want others to see that you have a goal/belief just for the sake of it?

Right, so what a person says about their goals in effect isn’t to be taken at face value, it’s meta-communication about what face they want to present to the world

This is what happens when people overpunish for opinions. E.g. it's ok to be racist as long as people can't prove you are / you never say anything about it.

People who say what they feel in these situations are almost always appreciated for their candor. If they are equally shrewd they are usually well respected.
