I hate that being self-aware is totally different from actually being able to change your behavior which is why therapy quickly helps people understand self-destructive patterns but they still stay in therapy repeating those patterns for years & years

Right (self-awareness is not the same as behavior change) & wrong (therapy doesn’t help for years). Your brain needs training, not insight. Evidence-based therapies like CBT & ACT can still can improve behavior significantly in as little as 4-12 weeks. Actualization though...

And create a persona for themselves that is constructed of things they've analysed about their past "Yeah, I do X because my dad beat me when I was 5". Doesn't actually move them from that place but they can explain it. It's really sad I think.

Change means internalizing what you know. Internalizing usually has to be physiological. Most people never touch the physiological in therapy. It remains an intellectual exercise. Crying (like really really crying) helps. As well as behavioral-focused and exposure therapies

So true. It takes a healthy dose of creative and pragmatic self-gaming to actually change [it has to be intrinsically rewarding]. But really that's it. Much easier than all the books make it out to be; but it has to be done right. "Buy nice or buy twice", eh? (I'm always happy).

Eh, there’s nothing you can’t do in ACT that EMDR provides. You can do any exposure work within an ACT framework. In my experience, it helps clients prepare for it by increasing their willingness to experience and tolerate distress.

Mindfulness is just a tool to let us know how far/different we are from the desired self.

Far from it—mindfulness can relax the grip of the desire to be other than what you already are
