people are always like “living in sf must be so nice you can just head down to big sur or yosemite whenever” but actually camping in northern california is unbelievably competitive and you literally cannot find a single place to pitch a tent last minute, let alone book a room

Any of the high Sierra passes, like out of Sonora pass, are pretty much as nice as Yosemite, FWIW. And far less crowded.

Great tip. There are so many places — I think the trick to getting out with ease (while having a full time job/life esp) is partly to make it a routine. For spring & fall, my next up is Mammoth Lakes.
