people are always like “living in sf must be so nice you can just head down to big sur or yosemite whenever” but actually camping in northern california is unbelievably competitive and you literally cannot find a single place to pitch a tent last minute, let alone book a room

After years of impulse camping I feel your stress, agree, but also disagree // Big Sur, the hardest for reserved spots BUT you can always hike into the Ventana Wilderness 3.75 hrs away & find amazingness. Yosemite, never once not gotten a tent spot; you just gotta leave at 0500.

If you have a camper van, are willing to camp on BLM land, or just willing to hike a few miles into the backcountry, a world of opportunities opens up.

Isn’t Federal land also available for camping? There isn’t running water. It it often has bathrooms and fire pits. You can only bild a fire after completing a 5 minute training you can do online. https://www.readyforwildfire.org/permits/campfire-permit/ …

there are pretty much always hike-in spots available at Henry Coe! it’s closer than Big Sur or Yosemite too. Gets hot at the peak of summer but really nice in spring

Yeah, hike-in multiplies campsites available time you by 5x. Unfortunately, I feel like most own cheaper rents unsuitable for hiking.

This is entirely untrue. Try going anywhere that's not a top 10 destination.

Lots of hike-in spots that are never full in places like Shasta-Trinity National Forest. It's closer than Yosemite too!

though to be fair, if you drive far enough south on Hwy 1 out of San Francisco you'll eventually outlast everyone and probably find a spot when you arrive at a walkup site at 1am :)

Not when you go by off road motorcycle and don't need a prepared campsite. I have never had to book in advance as long as I drive at least two hours.
