I feel like a lot of US citizens don’t quite get how hard it is to get an immigrant visa even if you are super qualified—many friends/family have struggled w the H1-B lottery or spent months applying for an O1 or got denied entry even though they have MIT degrees/great jobs/etc

Though iirc, even O1 disallows self-sponsorship, unless you use it to immediately apply for an EB-1A green card, albeit the self-sponsorship approach is said to be harder.

What one could do is perhaps start a company abroad and then, a year later, come to the US on an L-1A visa to expand the company’s offices here.
