I feel like a lot of US citizens don’t quite get how hard it is to get an immigrant visa even if you are super qualified—many friends/family have struggled w the H1-B lottery or spent months applying for an O1 or got denied entry even though they have MIT degrees/great jobs/etc

This applies even to immigrants from countries like Canada/Australia that have great relationships with the US. Plus if you’re trying to start a company it’s even harder because most visas are employment-based and there are literally ~2 options for founders

have seen people do crazy risky things like call in sick to their H1B job for half a year while trying to get on a visa that would let them start a company bc there was no other way. You can be a Cambridge grad trying to start a biotech company and be totally helpless

Sure. It is hard because so many wish to come. The numbers of people are enormous and really impact US labor market for tech workers. Sad to say it probably needs to be even more difficult than it already is.

It took me 18 months, and ~$10k to get a green card coming from NZ, and literally having everything in my favor. It is SO hard.

Canadian immigration policies + access to American capital (and proximity to the world’s largest market) is probably the easiest way to overcome this issue at the moment!

Obviously Canadian immigration isn’t perfect (for eg. Regressive medical inadmissibility rules that make it extremely hard for anyone with *any* medical condition to move here), but it’s moving in the right direction!

We started a company to help people with immigration and the freedom of "global mobility" (which you get if you have a passport from a "developed" country). We are starting with engineers that can get jobs in big tech like Google, but would like to help everyone eventually.

You should probably take a look at Romain’s case.

Romain (from France) started 3 corporations in California two in 2013 one in 2015, hired only US citizen, invested over 600K$ but got denied E-2 and cannot reenter the US since 2015, even though all 3 CORPs are still existing and growing :(

I appreciate and understand the sentiment but also don't necessarily think that "high-qualified" immigrants should get have an easier time than "low-qualified" immigrants. We should make immigration easier for all.

Entrepreneurs help the economy and society by creating innovation, jobs and other opportunities. That's silly that we would make it hard for them to that here.
