I feel like a lot of US citizens don’t quite get how hard it is to get an immigrant visa even if you are super qualified—many friends/family have struggled w the H1-B lottery or spent months applying for an O1 or got denied entry even though they have MIT degrees/great jobs/etc

This applies even to immigrants from countries like Canada/Australia that have great relationships with the US. Plus if you’re trying to start a company it’s even harder because most visas are employment-based and there are literally ~2 options for founders

have seen people do crazy risky things like call in sick to their H1B job for half a year while trying to get on a visa that would let them start a company bc there was no other way. You can be a Cambridge grad trying to start a biotech company and be totally helpless

I don't think you can start your own company on a TN visa.

Australians have the added benefit of a E3. Like H1B but without the crowd, perpetual 2yr renews but with an intent to return back to OZ. You don't even need a lawyer to get an E3. Unfortunately H1Bs are noisy and human labor farms abusing them thus the complexity.

Australian E3 is laughably easy compared to every other option, NYC agencies run substantially on Aussie frontend dev/designer labor defying the international community to support a bloody and ill-advised invasion pays off!

Australians get special treatment that makes it easy for them to immigrate because of a trade deal signed around the time they supported the US in Iraq. Otherwise yes, it’s insanely hard for ppl from our closest allies to immigrate.

It’s crazy difficult. Took me 1 year of preparing a nearly 700 page application for a super obscure visa with really unclear requirements, and now I need to start the process for the next step. Just a crazy amount of work. And I’m Australian so I have it best
