CBT taught me to control my emotions through the conscious modification of negative thoughts when what I really needed was to have more insight into why I felt bad and understand that I’m distinct from my thoughts/feelings (and therefore it’s okay to experience negative ones)

Abstracting and sublimating emotions can be useful in times of crisis, but it can also cause you to ‘move past’ negative emotions without confronting the underlying shame, fear, frustration, etc. https://twitter.com/meditationstuff/status/1204439983299465217?s=21 …https://twitter.com/meditationstuff/status/1204439983299465217 …

1) do you have any book suggestions that seemed to be especially helpful, or is it more the aggregate that helped practice? 2) wondering if you had come across SSC post where Scott suggests approximately equal efficacy among most methods? https://slatestarcodex.com/2019/11/20/book-review-all-therapy-books/ … ?

Though I probably ought look more into what he is taking efficacy to mean

This!! CBT was a poweful tool to learn but it provided 0 insight into why feelings / negative thought patterns / behaviors were occurring in the first place. Psychodynamic therapy was a lot more transformative for me resulting in sustained positive change and perspective.

What is cbt?

Cognitive behavioral therapy, I believe currently the sort of 'standard' or most mainstream form of talk therapy, iirc has its roots in the 50s / 60s with Albert Ellis and Carl Rogers among others
