Chinese family-owned restaurants are closing because there’s no one to take over but the parents are happy because that means their children have good professional jobs and can lead a less grueling life 😭😭😭https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/24/upshot/chinese-restaurants-closing-upward-mobility-second-generation.html …

“But [Mr. Sit is proud of what he built. He is proud that his daughters, American-born educated professionals, are working jobs they have chosen, jobs they love. “I hoped they have a better life than me,” he said. “A good life. And they do.” 😭😭😭😭😭

This is also my story. I got a part time job waiting tables freshman year in college. My dad visited me and shoved an envelope with $2K cash across the table at dinner. Told me he didn’t spend years running a restaurant so I could wait tables. Said to focus on school. 😭pic.twitter.com/9X21vstlWz

As someone who grew up in a family restaurant business, I miss our restaurants and the food, but would never want to work in the restaurant business again. My dad often talks about how it was his last resort and that he could’ve done anything if he had the opportunities.

Kind of fascinating how a difficult cut-throght, low-margin, “unscalable”, industry isn’t going to go anywhere because we all like to and need to eat.

Singapore went through the same phase and now their grandkids want to restart/continue the business but it is only a shadow of itself as the recipes have passed with their creator.

Often there's nostalgia involved with that and food trends have moved away from what was sold by the grandparents...

I manage my parents Thai restaurant. I have 5 other adult siblings and they are all smart enough to have found careers not related to our family business. My parents know I have no desire to continue the restaurant and I encourage them to sell it instead of giving it to me.
