This is super interesting because most theories of emotion suggest that emotions have distinct physical fingerprints, manifest in the same way in everyone and are universally recognizable, but neuroscience has totally failed to find evidence for this.

Barrett says that the classic view that emotions “happen” to you—an event occurs, neurons get triggered, and you make a facial expression you can’t control—is wrong and our brains instead construct “instances of emotion” based off learned concepts.

A Goodreads review describes the book as “mad ballsy” and “a virtual slaughterhouse of sacred cows,” which is all the more reason to read it.
