Minari is an A24 film about an immigrant Korean family that moves to Arkansas to farm, scored by the same guy who did The Last Black Man in San Francisco; can’t wait for the New Yorker to describe it as “luminous, quietly moving”

how terrifying would it be to have a horrible argument with Ari Aster and then two years later see a lightly disguised version of you on the screen getting brutally chewed up from the inside out by some slavering demon-ghoul against a beautiful eerie backdrop

I think literally everyone in the ~300 person audience was crying and it made cry, he sees like 90 films a year and NO MOVIE HAS EVER MADE HIM CRY

have seen people do crazy risky things like call in sick to their H1B job for half a year while trying to get on a visa that would let them start a company bc there was no other way. You can be a Cambridge grad trying to start a biotech company and be totally helpless

This applies even to immigrants from countries like Canada/Australia that have great relationships with the US. Plus if you’re trying to start a company it’s even harder because most visas are employment-based and there are literally ~2 options for founders

I feel like a lot of US citizens don’t quite get how hard it is to get an immigrant visa even if you are super qualified—many friends/family have struggled w the H1-B lottery or spent months applying for an O1 or got denied entry even though they have MIT degrees/great jobs/etc

Is there a word to describe taking a photo of a paragraph or two in a book, and sharing it on social media? I do it all the time, and wanted to reference it, but my mind went to "book screenshots" which is clearly wrong.
