In less than 24 hours my office has received over 1,000 emails demanding that San Francisco defund the police department
Im not 100% on board w/defunding as is, but the idea is to hire less people whos specialty is combat and more who are social workers and others who are better equipped to deal with the most common situations where people call 911. It would also allow more $ to address root issues

So because police are overly aggressive the solution is to have them interact with the community *less* and become something more like a paramilitary force. How is that any kind of a solution? Surely the best approach is to have cops who know the people they serve.

No, I'm saying when you hire someone to interact with the community who's main job is going to be dealing with civil disputes, maybe hire a social worker instead of angry dudes with guns who are looking for a fight. We don't need our police to be militarized as they are now
