It’s a total mystery why enrolments in the humanities are down. Any young person who ‘loves’ their subject is told they’re doing it wrong.https://twitter.com/wmarybeard/status/1015514249211326469?s=21 …

I have spent my whole life studying and teching ancient Greece and Rome. We try to get our students to go beyond 'loving' Homer & Periclean Athens, to see that it is all the more interesting for its faults too. Romantic 'admiration' can be a real block on understanding.

Down...? 45 years ago this was a basic principle of my undergard degree. Fact alert: in my uni enrolments in Classics are not down. Where there have been falls, I can think of a host of other reasons (school curriculum, mercantilisation of degree courses etc etc )

Degrees cost students money. Previously it cost a lot less. Irrespective of the "don't have to pay it back" argument, it still pushes students to choose degrees that have higher chance of job on graduation. Any Oxbridge degree is good. Outside? Humanities limits options.

There are a lot of young people who are put off the humanities due to the contemporary theories that dominate them.

Claire, you can't possibly learn abt ancient heroes (who were RISK TAKERS) from BS-prone, rent-seeking, low-IQ, library rats, in self-evaluating "peer" rings, who make their living from charities (or, worse, government salary). Read the original texts. Gabish? #SkinintheGame
