If you're wondering about the specific proximate case this is referencing, Guild Wars 2 developer (and frankly brilliant advocate for the game and its community) Jessica Price was fired because she didn't sufficiently coddle this dude's opinions.

I don't know how to fix this since the men doing this will inevitably insist that this is exactly how they interact with men devs, when it's clearly not.
-
And inevitably, when someone points this out, what happens is that they demand to see the receipts, in essence demanding someone else to work for their improvement.

That's a great observation. I don't pay enough attention to see that sort of thing (don't tend to engage in game communities beyond the odd steam thread re bugs). Is it reasonable to formulate as: "I reckon XYZ, what do you think?"? That's kinda both declarative and a question.

I would actually avoid that in the kind of case that I'm talking about here, because you're not asking the person their opinion *on the subject* but rather their opinion *on your opinion*, which is very different.

I risk embodying the bad thing by commenting at all but... as a dude on twitter it unfortunately took me a while to realize I need to interrogate if I’m commenting because I want to learn or understand something, or if I want someone else to recognize my own intelligence

So i tend to remind myself “it’s okay just to read, teacher doesn’t always have to know how clever you are”

I also have a problem with this, FWIW.
