"The right can get away with boring leaders. But for the left to end its losing streak, it must choose someone phenomenal"

That was a 29.4°C (84.9°F) temperature differential in a single day.

Buying lottery tickets is for suckers. My email inbox is proof that you don't even need to buy a ticket to win one of those things.

Has anyone else noticed that left-wing parties only win elections when they have a highly charismatic leader, but right-wing parties don't have that constraint?

Occasionally it felt like a chore, especially when on a book not bad enough to abandon, but not good enough to really want to read it. But overall it's been a great experience. In 2020 I will aim for 73 books, one every 5 days. Still plenty, but a gentler pace.

100 books in this time is one every 3.5 days. Luckily, I am a fast reader. I average maybe 1.5 hours of reading a day. My goal probably biased me away from some longer books, though I did read two 800+ pagers. (Also one 130 pager!) The mean & median are probably both in the 300s.

On top of the 100 I finished, I abandoned 15 books. Life's too short to finish every book you start. I like the rule "give a book N pages, where N is 100 minus your age", but some I didn't even make past 10 pages. I also finished a couple of books that I should have abandoned.

I enjoy browsing the "new & notable releases" shelf at my library branches. Before making an impulse choice at the library, I now look up Amazon/GoodReads reviews on my phone. I started doing this once I realized my impulse choices were often bad!

I frequently use the library's online catalogue to see if they have books I'm interested in. I use the Library Extension in Firefox, which augments any book's Amazon page with a little box that shows whether my library has a copy:

Finding this many books to read takes some effort. I usually have between 2 and 8 books beside my bed. I maintain a to-read list, and I keep an eye out for new titles to add to it. End of year lists of best books are great for this. And I love getting recommendations.

Before that, I was a heavy Kindle user for several years. The Kindle got me back into regular reading after a gap of multiple years. But I now prefer the physical feel, character and variety of paper books. (The Kindle is still fantastic when travelling.)

Plus there are three other library branches in my municipality. Between them, the four branches carry most titles that I'm interested in. I now visit my local branch multiple times a week, and the other branches occasionally. Libraries are wonderful places.

I now realize I was accustomed to vast university libraries. I have learned that, for leisure reading, a small library with a high proportion of interesting items is as good or better than a vast library with a tiny proportion of interesting items.

Of the 100 books I finished, 89 were from my local library, 8 were paper books from elsewhere, and 3 were on Kindle. I only started using my local library last year. When I first visited my local branch 10 years ago I thought that it was bad, because it's small and a bit dingy.

I find the main thing that distinguishes books by women from books by men is that books by women tend to have more and better-written female characters. Unsurprising in hindsight, but it took me a long time to realize it and put it in words.

Books by men still come my way: gifts, new books from favourite authors, unusually interesting books, etc. But my lifetime balance is still well short on the women side, so I'll keep doing this for some time. I'm very happy with the decision.

Of the 100 books I finished, 80 were by a woman, 18 were by a man, and 2 were by a woman and a man. A few years ago I realized that most of the books I'd read in my life were written by men. So for the past few years I have largely sought out books written by women.

Of the 100 books I finished, over 90 were novels. I read mostly literary fiction, plus some sci-fi and fantasy, though my tastes are fairly broad. I wonder if I should read more detective/thriller books, but the covers and/or blurbs often put me off.
