Fantastic piece. I’m using it as part of my dissertation research. Is the trauma b/c we are having these drills or a failure of trainers & leaders to implement evidence-based, site-specific, developmentally appropriate, & trauma informed programs? I see the later as the issue.

Probably both. I'll be honest - I don't know how you create an evidence based approach to something that is so rare and impossible to test experimentally. What is the counter-factual? Emergency drills in are important - fire, etc. - but shooter specific drills just create fear.

Hello Anthony, in this case we compared students that reported experiencing an active shooter drill in high school with those that did not.

Do they improve *actual* safety as opposed to *perceived* safety? I'm assuming the answer is "no", but that seems relevant.

An excellent and very relevant question! Unfortunately, several factors make it very difficult to answer: rarity of events necessitating the drill, heterogeneity of drill procedures, location of the attack, attacker characteristics, etc.

Oh my gosh I am so interested in your paper! I was a classroom teacher and had to lead several Active Shooter drills as my students panicked, sobbed, or rolled their eyes at me. It was terrible and frustrating and I'm not convinced we gained anything by doing them.

I know the drills freak out both my kids

The first time I lead one as a sub was the worst experience for all of us. Not having a teacher there who knows you made it much scarier.
