Real problem is the algorithmic amplification doesn't have an "arbitrary" anything. Through trusting these central information aggregators, we've given unfathomable power to a select few to control the social narrative at a scale never before seen in human history.

Our debates about deplatforming are fraught because we treat platforms as space for public speech, when what they actually are is algorithmic amplification lotteries that reward content that pushes to extremes until hitting a (seemingly arbitrary) Icarus line.

Well part of the problem is that no one gave any one any power. And if you want to be charitable, no one (really) even claimed any power. The power happened as a byproduct of network effects on world scale social information platforms and now we're trying to catch up.
